The best-restored Great Wall section for first-timers — greener, less crowded than Badaling, and easy to reach from Beijing.

Aperçu

Mutianyu is the smart choice for most visitors: a beautifully restored stretch of the Ming-era Great Wall that is greener, less mobbed and easier to walk than Badaling. The wall here snakes along forested ridgelines, with watchtowers spaced closely enough that you can string together a satisfying walk in a couple of hours.

The section is served by a cable car or a chairlift-plus-toboggan ride, which is half the fun for many visitors. You can also hike the steep stairway to the wall from the base. Once on the wall, the restored path runs level for a while before climbing hard toward the western watchtowers.

It is far enough from the city that a half-day trip makes sense; go early on a weekday and you may have whole stretches to yourself.

Mon avis sincère

Mutianyu is the crowd-pleaser for a reason — it is pretty, easy and well organised. Purists will find it almost too tidy, but for a first visit with limited time it is hard to beat. The toboggan ride down is a genuine highlight, especially with kids.

Y aller

The easiest independent option is the direct tourist bus from Dongzhimen (or a shared minivan from many hotels), taking roughly 90 minutes. By public transport, take the bus to Huairou and connect to the local shuttle to the wall. A private car or tour is the most flexible choice for families and groups.

Itinéraire conseillé

Ride the cable car up to Tower 14, walk west along the restored wall toward the higher towers (16–20) for the best views, then return and ride or toboggan down. The fit and adventurous can skip the cable car and climb the stairway from the base, then hike the more rugged eastern section. Two to three hours on the wall is enough for most.

Où loger

Most people visit Mutianyu as a day trip from central Beijing. If you want to stay close, Huairou has a handful of resorts and guesthouses at the foot of the wall, and the nearby villages offer simple farmstays. For first-timers, sleeping in central Beijing and coming out for the day is the simplest plan.

Conseils pratiques

  • Go on a weekday and arrive before 9am to beat the tour-bus crowds.
  • The cable car and toboggan are run by different companies; check which ticket you are buying.
  • Wear real shoes — the restored path still has steep, uneven steps.
  • There is little shade on the wall; bring water and sunscreen.
  • Toilets and food are at the base, not on the wall itself.

Questions fréquentes

How far is Mutianyu from Beijing?
About 70 km, roughly 90 minutes to two hours by road depending on traffic.
Is the cable car worth it?
For most people yes — the climb to the wall is steep and the views from the cable car are excellent. Hikers can skip it.
Which is better, Mutianyu or Badaling?
Mutianyu for scenery and fewer crowds; Badaling if you want the most famous, most accessible section (and are okay with crowds).
