Terracotta Army
Aperçu
The Terracotta Army is an underground legion of thousands of life-size clay soldiers, horses and chariots, buried more than 2,000 years ago to guard the tomb of Qin Shi Huang, China's first emperor. Discovered by farmers in 1974, it is now one of the most important archaeological sites in the world.
The site is organised around three main pits. Pit 1 is the vast, hangar-like hall most people picture — rows of warriors in battle formation. Pits 2 and 3 are smaller but reveal more detail, including kneeling archers, cavalry and a command post. A museum on site displays the famous bronze chariots.
Each face is unique, which is part of the wonder — no two soldiers are alike. It is the kind of place that justifies every superlative, and it is worth the hour-long journey from Xi'an.

Y aller
Take the direct tourist bus (line 5/306) from Xi'an Railway Station — it runs frequently and takes about an hour. Alternatively, the metro now reaches the site area with a short shuttle connection. Taxis and private tours are convenient but pricier; do not take unlicensed drivers who hover around the station.

Itinéraire conseillé
Start at Pit 1 — the iconic hall — then walk to Pit 2 (archers and cavalry) and Pit 3 (the command post), and finish at the museum with the bronze chariots. The logical order follows the site path; the shuttle cart is optional since the pits are close together. Three hours covers it comfortably.
Où loger
Most people visit as a day trip from Xi'an and stay in the city, where the Muslim Quarter and city wall offer the best base. Staying in Lintong is possible but unnecessary unless you want to visit the nearby Huaqing Palace hot springs and Mount Li early the next morning.
Conseils pratiques
- Arrive at opening (8:30) to see Pit 1 before the tour groups.
- Visit the pits in order 1, 2, 3 — the site is designed that way.
- Hire an audio guide or guide; the site has little signage.
- Take the official tourist bus from the railway station, not touts.
- Bring your passport — it may be checked for ticket purchase.
