West Lake
Überblick
West Lake is the heart of Hangzhou and one of the most celebrated landscapes in China — a serene lake ringed by pagodas, temples, gardens and willow-lined causeways that have inspired poets and painters for a thousand years. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and largely free to explore.
The classic experience is simply to walk or cycle the shores, crossing the Su and Bai causeways, pausing at the pagodas and pavilions, and taking a boat out to the islands. The views shift constantly with the light, and the surrounding hills add a gentle backdrop.
West Lake rewards slow travel — there is no single "sight" to check off, but a string of lovely moments. It is at its best at dawn and dusk, when the crowds thin and the light softens.

Anreise
The lake is central and easy to reach — Metro Line 1 to Longxiangqiao or Fengqi Road stations puts you on the lakefront. From there, walk, rent a public bike or take the sightseeing bus that circles the shore. Taxis and ride-hailing are convenient for reaching specific corners of the lake.

Empfohlene Route
Start at the eastern shore, walk the Bai Causeway to the north, loop past the Broken Bridge and Baochu Pagoda, then cross to the Su Causeway on the west side. Take a boat out to the islands or pause at a lakeside tea house. A bike makes the full circuit easy in an afternoon.
Unterkunft
Stay near the lake's eastern shore or Wulin Square for the most convenient base, though hotels here are pricier. The areas around the lake's north and west sides are quieter and greener. Hangzhou is walkable and bike-friendly, so a slightly further hotel is still easy to manage.
