The Hani people's sculpted mountain terraces — a vast, mirrored landscape that is pure magic at sunrise.

Resumen

The Yuanyang Rice Terraces are a breathtaking, vast system of rice terraces carved into the mountains of southern Yunnan by the Hani people over more than a thousand years. In the winter months the flooded terraces reflect the sky in sheets of colour, and at sunrise and sunset the landscape turns into a canvas of light.

The terraces are spread across a large area with several key viewpoints — Duoyishu for sunrise, Bada and Laohuzui for sunset, and the village of Qingkou for Hani culture. Getting between them requires transport, and the light changes constantly, so photographers tend to linger.

It is remote and takes effort to reach, but for many travellers it is the single most memorable landscape in Yunnan. Go in the flooded season (roughly November to March) for the mirror-like reflections.

Mi opinión sincera

Yuanyang is one of the most beautiful places in China but it is remote, cold in winter and entirely about the light — in fog or bad weather you will see little. Go in the flooded season, stay by a viewpoint, and budget time and patience for the weather. The payoff is unforgettable.

Cómo llegar

Reach Yuanyang by bus from Kunming (about 6–7 hours) or via a connecting town such as Jianshui, then transfer to the villages. Once there, hire a local driver or motorcycle taxi to move between the widely spaced viewpoints — public transport between them is limited. A private driver for a day is the practical choice.

Ruta sugerida

Arrive in the afternoon and shoot sunset at Bada or Laohuzui, then stay near Duoyishu to catch sunrise over the terraces the next morning. Spend the day visiting Qingkou village and the other viewpoints, then either stay another night or head on to Jianshui or Kunming.

Dónde alojarse

Stay in the villages near the viewpoints — Duoyishu for sunrise and Pugao Laozhai for a quieter, traditional base. Guesthouses are simple but well positioned. Book a room near the viewpoint you want to shoot so you can walk there before dawn.
