How to Book China Train Tickets: 12306 and Beyond
China's high-speed rail network is the best way to get around, but the ticketing system confuses first-timers. Here's how it actually works.
Your two main options
- The 12306 English app — the official app. No booking fee, but a clunkier interface and passport registration.
- Trip.com International — a small fee, but a polished English interface, 24/7 support and the ability to queue requests in advance.
When tickets go on sale
Tickets are released 15 days before departure at 6am Beijing time. Popular routes like Beijing–Shanghai sell out within minutes, so book 3–15 days ahead — or queue a request on Trip.com days before release.
Boarding with your passport
Arrive 45 minutes early, pass security, and scan your passport at the electronic gate. No paper ticket is needed for high-speed trains. Second class is comfortable — five seats per row, reclining, with power outlets.
