Golden Week in China: How to Avoid the Crowds
Golden Week — the first week of October — is the single busiest travel period in China, and arguably the world. Hundreds of millions of people travel at once, and it reshapes every part of a trip.
When and why
It runs from October 1 to 7, built around China's National Day. It's one of the two "golden weeks" (the other is around Lunar New Year in late January or February).
What it means for travelers
- Train and flight tickets sell out almost instantly and prices surge.
- Top sights like the Forbidden City and the Great Wall are at absolute capacity.
- Hotels book up and raise rates across the country.
Your options
- Avoid it — travel in September or mid-October instead for far better conditions.
- If you must go, book everything weeks ahead, and avoid the headline sights on peak days.
- Go remote — smaller towns and nature areas are far less affected than the big cities.
Lunar New Year is the other crush point; plan around it the same way.
