Longji Rice Terraces
Aperçu
The Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Rice Terraces are a vast system of terraced paddies that climb the forested mountains north of Guilin, sculpted over centuries by the Zhuang and Yao minorities. In the growing season the terraces glow green, and after the harvest they flood and mirror the sky.
The area is split into several viewing areas, the most famous being Ping'an and the larger Jinkeng (Dazhai) terraces. Waking at the village guesthouses to watch the sunrise spill over the terraces is the classic Longji experience.
It is a working agricultural landscape, not a theme park — the villages are real, the trails are steep, and the pace is slow. Give it at least one night to appreciate it properly.
Mon avis sincère
Y aller
From Guilin, take a direct tourist bus or private transfer to the Longji area (about 2.5 hours), then a local shuttle or walk up to the villages. Public buses run to Longsheng and Ping'an with connections onward. The final climb to the viewpoints is steep and on foot.

Itinéraire conseillé
Arrive in the afternoon, settle into a village guesthouse, and walk to the nearest viewpoint for sunset. Rise early for sunrise over the terraces, spend the morning hiking between villages (Ping'an to the Zhuang village, or the Jinkeng viewpoints), and return to Guilin in the afternoon. One night is the minimum.
Où loger
Stay overnight in the villages — Ping'an is the classic choice, while Jinkeng (Dazhai) offers bigger terraces and more hiking. Wooden guesthouses line the slopes, many with terrace-facing rooms. Book a room with a view of the sunrise; it is the whole point of staying.
Conseils pratiques
- Stay at least one night to catch sunrise — the terraces are best at dawn.
- Go May–June or September–October for the best colours.
- Bring a torch for the pre-dawn walk to the viewpoints.
- The trails are steep and can be slippery — wear proper shoes.
- Weather changes fast in the mountains; pack layers and a rain jacket.
