Paying in China: Alipay, WeChat Pay and Cards

Paying in China: Alipay, WeChat Pay and Cards
China is nearly cashless. Here is how to set up mobile payments, when cards work, and how to keep some cash handy.

China runs on two super-apps — Alipay and WeChat Pay — and most payments, from metro tickets to street food, happen by QR code. For visitors, the key change is that both apps now accept international cards, which has made travel dramatically easier.

Setting up

  • Download Alipay or WeChat and register with your phone number.
  • Link an international Visa or Mastercard in the app.
  • You may face small fees or limits — keep a backup card.

Cash

Cash has not disappeared, and you should carry some for taxis, small vendors and the moments when a QR code fails. ATMs accept foreign cards at major banks, and hotels can usually change money.

Frequently asked questions

Can foreigners use Alipay?
Yes — both Alipay and WeChat Pay now support linking international credit cards.
Should I carry cash?
Some — for small vendors, taxis and as a backup, though mobile payments cover most situations.
