China Packing List: What to Actually Bring
The essentials — power banks, your VPN and eSIM, the right cash, and the things travelers forget until it's too late.
Most of what you'd pack for China is obvious — but a few items matter far more than others, and they're easy to get wrong.
The non-negotiables
- A VPN, installed and tested before you fly — VPN sites are blocked in China.
- An eSIM or local data plan — set it up before you land.
- Alipay or WeChat Pay, linked to a card — China is nearly cashless.
- A power bank under 20,000 mAh — carry-on only.
What people forget
- Cash as backup — ¥500–1,000 for the rare place that can't take cards.
- Your passport — you'll need it for hotels, trains and major sights.
- Offline maps and a translation app — download them in advance.
- Hotel addresses written in Chinese — invaluable for taxis.
Clothing
Pack layers for the shoulder seasons, comfortable walking shoes above all, and modesty-conscious but weather-appropriate clothes for temples.
