Google Maps is unreliable in China. Here are the apps that work — and how to use them without Chinese.
The first thing to know: Google Maps is largely useless in China, with outdated data and poor coverage. The apps that work are Chinese, but most now have workable English interfaces.
The apps to use
- Apple Maps — surprisingly good in China, with English labels.
- Amap (Gaode) or Baidu Maps — the most accurate, partly English.
- Metro apps for city subway maps in English.
Tips
Have addresses in Chinese characters, and learn to show a destination rather than type it. Translation apps that work offline or via your VPN are invaluable for reading signs and menus.
