Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a landscape of thousands of sandstone pillars and peaks rising abruptly from forested valleys, often wreathed in mist. It is the scenery that reportedly inspired the floating mountains of the film Avatar, and it is every bit as otherworldly in person.

The park is vast, and the highlights are spread across several areas connected by shuttle buses and cable cars. The Yuanjiajie area holds the famous Avatar Hallelujah Mountain and the dramatic Tianzi Mountain viewpoints; the Bailong Elevator — a glass lift bolted to a cliff face — is a spectacle in itself.

Mist and rain are part of the experience; the pillars look best when clouds drift between them. Plan at least a full day, and two is better, to move between the main viewing areas without rushing.

Zhangjiajie is jaw-dropping and also crowded, complicated and weather-dependent — you will queue for buses, elevators and viewpoints, and in heavy fog the pillars vanish entirely. It rewards a two-day plan and patience. The Avatar connection is a bit of a stretch, but the scenery does not need the hype.
