How to Ride China's High-Speed Rail
China's high-speed trains are one of the great travel experiences of the country — fast, punctual and surprisingly calm. Once you know the routine, long distances shrink to a few comfortable hours.
Before you board
Your ticket is linked to your passport, which is checked at the station entrance and sometimes again at the platform. Arrive early, clear a security check like an airport, and find your gate on the departure board. Platforms open a set time before departure, and trains leave exactly on schedule.
On board
Seats are assigned, so match your carriage and seat number. Overhead racks and end-of-carriage luggage areas hold big bags, and there is usually a snack trolley. Most announcements and signage are bilingual, which makes the whole thing far easier than it sounds.
