Getting Around China: Trains, Metro and Taxis
High-speed rail is the easiest way to cover long distances — here is how to book it, ride it and get around the cities.
China's high-speed rail network is the largest in the world, and it is the single best way to travel between cities. Trains are fast, punctual and comfortable, with English signage and ticketing.
Booking
- Book through the official 12306 app or a third-party app like Trip.com.
- Bring your passport — tickets are tied to it and checked at the gate.
- Book ahead for holidays, when trains sell out.
In cities
Metros are clean, cheap and largely English-signed. Taxis and ride-hailing (Didi) are plentiful; have your destination written in Chinese to show the driver. Bikes and e-bikes are everywhere via the bike-share apps.
