Aperçu

This is the classic first-timer route through China — the one most travelers dream about before they ever land. In two weeks you move from the imperial north to the laid-back southwest and finish on the glittering east coast, using China's high-speed rail to glide between cities that would otherwise eat whole days of travel.

The pacing is deliberate: two full days in each big city, with travel days kept short and one or two buffer days built in. Beijing anchors the history, Xi'an adds the Terracotta Army, Chengdu slows everything down with pandas and teahouses, Guilin delivers the postcard scenery, and Shanghai ends the trip with a modern jolt.

Why this route works

  • Every leg is a single high-speed rail ride under 6 hours.
  • You hit China's four most iconic sights in one trip: the Forbidden City, the Great Wall, the Terracotta Army and the Li River.
  • It balances cities with nature — you never feel stuck in one mode for too long.

Best time to go

April–May and September–October. Spring brings blossom and mild weather; autumn brings clear skies over Guilin's karst peaks.
