Best Time to Visit China: Month by Month

Journal best time to visit ChinaChina weather by monthwhen to visit ChinaChina in October
Spring and autumn are the sweet spots, but every month has a reason to go — a month-by-month guide to weather, crowds and festivals.

China is vast, so there's no single best time to visit — but there are clearly better windows for most travelers.

The sweet spots

  • April–May (spring): mild weather and blossom across the north. Ideal all-round.
  • September–October (autumn): the most reliable weather, clear skies and golden light — the best months for scenery like Guilin.

The months to weigh carefully

  • June–August (summer): hot and humid in the south, but the highlands stay cool — head for Yunnan or Guizhou.
  • November–March (winter): cold in the north but quiet and cheap; the exception is Harbin's ice festival.

Golden Week warning

The first week of October is China's national holiday, when the entire country travels at once. Trains sell out, sights are packed and prices spike. If you can, avoid it — or plan well ahead.
