Mutianyu vs Badaling: Which Great Wall Section to Visit
There are dozens of Great Wall sections near Beijing, but most travelers end up choosing between two: Badaling and Mutianyu. The right choice depends on what you value.
Badaling
The most famous and most visited section. It's the closest to Beijing by public transport and fully restored, which makes it impressive but crowded — especially on weekends and holidays. If you want the classic, busy, postcard experience, this is it.
Mutianyu
A more scenic and noticeably less crowded section, with dense forest and a long, rolling stretch of restored wall. It has a cable car and a toboggan ride down, which makes it more fun for families. The trade-off is a slightly longer trip from the city.
The verdict
- Choose Badaling for the easiest access and the most iconic views.
- Choose Mutianyu for better scenery, fewer crowds and the toboggan.
- Go early either way — the difference between 8am and 10am is enormous.
If you have the time, Mutianyu at sunrise is one of the best experiences in Beijing.
