ChinaCool: Summer Escapes to Beat the Heat
While China's plains swelter through 35°C summers, its highlands stay blissfully cool. That contrast has spawned "ChinaCool" — the trend of escaping to the country's mountain retreats.
Where to go
- Yunnan — Lijiang, Dali and Kunming, the "spring city," hover around 20–25°C all summer.
- Guizhou — misty plateau towns and waterfalls, cool and crowd-free.
- Sichuan's highlands — the mountains around the panda country stay fresh.
- Changbai Mountain — on the northeastern border, a genuinely alpine escape.
Why it works
Altitude is the secret. Cities above 1,500 meters stay mild even in July and August, making them ideal for hiking, tea terraces and small-town wandering while the coast bakes.
Planning tip
Book early — European and domestic travelers have caught on, and summer bookings to these regions have surged. Mountain weather changes fast, so pack layers even in summer.
