How Much Does a Trip to China Cost?
Real budgets for China — daily costs for budget, mid-range and comfortable travel, plus where the money actually goes.
China is one of the best-value destinations in Asia, but your daily cost depends heavily on your style. Here's what a realistic budget looks like.
Daily budgets (per person)
- Budget — $40–60: hostels, street food, metro and high-speed rail second class.
- Mid-range — $80–120: clean hotels, decent restaurants, taxis and the occasional tour.
- Comfortable — $150+: nice hotels, high-speed rail first class and top restaurants.
Where the money goes
- Accommodation is the biggest line — decent city hotels run $50–100 a night.
- Food is cheap; excellent meals can cost under $10.
- Transport is great value — high-speed rail is often cheaper than flying in the West.
- Attractions add up; major sights charge $10–25 each.
The honest answer
Most independent travelers spend $80–100 a day all-in for a comfortable trip. You can do it for half that, or double it without trying hard.
